Books I am VERY fussy about, If I've not got into them by the second page I'm kinda over it and ready to move on. The only books that I have truly enjoyed reading are the Osbourne Puzzler books when I was aged 9, Dan Brown's books (Davinci Code, Angels and Demons etc etc) and Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic range.
This leads me seamlessly on to the point that I just got in from the cinema, The girls and I (and Owen) went to see "Confessions of a Shopaholic".
I've never had an opportunity to say what I'm about to (as you can see my reading range is not vast)...but I don't think the film was as good as the book.
Isla Fisher played the main part "Becky Bloomwood" who is a lady in a serious amount of debt and spiralling out of of control (we've all been there have we not?). Miss Fisher was actually really funny. I wasn't too sure how well she would gel to the role; when I read the book I kinda visualised in my head what she looks like and Isla was not that but I soon got over this.
Becky goes to work as a journalist for Luke Brandon at a savings magazine. Luke is played by some guy who I can't even be bothered to look up...he was British and well...awful! It was one of those situations when you are watching a movie and you can't snap out of just how bad their acting is (imagine if you will, young Dakota whatever her name is from Golden Compass or that woman in Stardust that I thought was Gwyneth Paltrow but wasn't...Claire Danes! - painful!). Anyway she goes to work for Luke as she sees it as a step in to the fashion magazine that she wants to work for, yes similar to Devil wears Prada's story line I know! She falls in love with Luke and after doing a big sale sells her clothes and makes money to pay off her debt. If only it was that easy!
Sorry for those of you not familiar with the story, I admit I did just kinda spell the film out to you in a mere few paragraphs, but believe you me it's not very complex and you could all work it out for yourself in the first 10 minutes.
The story line of the film was completely different to the book which confused me, similarities were names of characters but that is kinda about it. If you're going to make a book into a movie, make a book into a movie, don't change it, whack some sub-plots in, shake up the order and call it the same name, Sophie Kinsella would be turning in her grave if she was dead.
The film was fun but in my opinion it was certainly a one-watcher. The film made me feel uncomfortable at points because I could relate to what she was doing (I too had a real price and a parents price and a way of talking every purchase into being an investment) the film at points, dare I say it, glorified getting into debt. I for one, got that buzz which I know too well, luckily however the film finished at about half ten and the only shop that I could have relieved myself in would have been the 24hour Sainsburys - the fashion Mecca.
Er Bitchbag, you wanted to relieve yourself in the 24 hour Sainsburys?! Thank goodness we headed right out the door before you got that chance! Weeing in public places is NOT allowed Paul, no matter how many times you do it!! I fricking loved this film, I agree with your review though - and Luke Brandon, kind of hot, but kind of douchey? Is that even a word? The Luke of my imagination when reading (and re-reading, and re-reading) the book is sooo hotter and less of a knob! Sorry to any minors who read this and get offended at the word KNOB, but it's true, you know it. Love to you dear xxx Oh, it's Lori by the way, in the event that you couldn't tell!
